For the first time since 1979, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is expanding nuclear development in the United States. The NRC has approved licenses for Southern Company to build two atomic reactors in Georgia. This is the first such vote since the incident at Three Mile Island and the recent tsunami in Japan.
Environmental groups oppose the licensing; they view this approval as a huge risk. Utilities across the nation are watching closely; this will be a test case that may kick start the development of more nuclear plants across the nation.
As engineers and consultants, it is always our job to analyze and provide technically-based opinions about the work presented to us. We need to evaluate data to add value, whether it is for an analysis of spent fuel storage, the safety of backup power generators, the case for plant life extension (material life and operations), or the potential environmental impacts associated with cooling systems. It is our job to assess the technical issues and provide a real risk benefit analysis of the issue at hand. This is how we build credibility.
As events unfold, we can help you stay informed of the technical issues, benefits and implications of nuclear energy development.

You'll speak to a lead consultant on your initial call with Kevin Kennedy Associates — he will help define your technical requirements, business needs and the most skilled experts who match. Sometimes that expert is him!
I sat down with Herb Dwyer to discuss work and the lighter side of life. Here's a snapshot of Herb's expertise in manufacturing, quality and packaging, and what makes him tick.
1. What is your area of expertise?
I bring together teams to address unique and challenging technical issues in all kinds of product areas — oil and gas, medical device, alternate energy, complex manufacturing settings are just a few — throughout the world.
2. What do you like most about that technology or discipline?
I enjoy the process of exploring solutions that help clients gain a return on their own idea and vision. It allows me to exercise my skills and background.
3. What type of challenge do you find stimulating?
I like opportunity. The chance to achieve something that seems almost impossible with good business and technical approaches — that’s stimulating to me. Establishing a greenfield or even brownfield company as a way to add value also appeals to me.
4. Who was your childhood hero and why?
My early hero was George Washington, because he was willing to give up comforts for a purpose and a vision. He led from the front in challenging times, when everyone was willing to give up and surrender. Against overwhelming odds, he stuck to his vision and won. He helped found something that outlasted him; I want to do the same.
5. What piece of information do you think would surprise clients? It could be about their industry, projects, technology or anything that comes to mind.
I spent two years wildcatting in the southern Oklahoma area while drilling relatively shallow gas and oil wells. I didn't really strike it rich, but I learned how much oil and gas exists there and could appreciate the risk and the rewards of developing natural resources. Understanding price and supply is a good lesson for any product or project.
6. You may travel a lot for work. But where do you like to vacation?
I like to vacation in two places: India, where I do short-term mission trips and Southern California, where our daughter lives. Both offer unique experiences and challenges, and I’m always actively doing something that allows me to learn.
For example, I learned about drip irrigation, simple sanitation methods and inexpensive ways to collect dung to make gas for cooking while in India. These methods are effective in third world countries—especially in village areas.

Get answers. Here's how:
I’ve always loved the energy and synergy that come from motivational conferences and networking opportunities. So I jumped at the chance to spearhead a speaker series in Indianapolis to bring together litigators for networking, learning and networking.
Kevin Kennedy Associates will be kicking off its 2012 Litigation Speaker Series on Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Skyline Club. Business Coach CJ McClanahan will discuss business development for litigators, how to build tactics into your weekly schedule and best practices to make these activities an easy and natural process.
CJ’s advice will be particularly helpful if your firm is expecting you to bring in new business, or if you are trying to expand your own firm. Business development involves skills that differ from those you picked up preparing for a law career, so we’re happy to share knowledge we’ve amassed in this area.
If you are in Indianapolis, please join us. We look forward to connecting and providing a little education and inspiration. A bonus: we will have a delicious lunch prepared by the Skyline Club.
Hope to see you soon!

Have you ever been talking to someone who’s really, really smart — and you’re pretty smart yourself — but you just can’t seem to understand one another?
Example: I was visiting my brother Kevin at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he was studying for his doctorate in mechanical engineering; I was in eighth grade at the time. When I asked what his thesis was about, Kevin very proudly launched into details any engineer would find intriguing. He elaborated on his theory and laid out the complexities surrounding large sheets of aluminum and steel. But after two minutes I had to stop him. “Kev,” I said, gesturing to my teenage self. “Eighth grade algebra.”
Our brother Brian, who was pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, stepped in and clarified, “Shar, it’s like this: Kev has basically figured out a mathematical formula to predict weaknesses in very large sheets of aluminum and steel, eliminating waste and saving money."
Now that was something I could easily understand.
What I didn’t realize at 13 years but definitely learned later in life, is that there are times when we all need a translator. We need someone who can explain issues outside of our toolbox and boil them down into manageable, understandable chunks.
That’s what I look for when I hire an expert: someone who is not only tops in their area but also tops in communication. I’m looking for an expert who can listen as well as he or she can hear.
We have good translators on hand; they'd be happy to interpret their specialized science and engineering knowledge for you. We look forward to your call.

When you first call Kevin Kennedy Associates, you might expect an expert to answer the phone. But the first person you’ll speak with is a project coordinator. You may think, “Why can’t we skip that part and go straight to the people with the technical knowledge?”
The PCs are administrators who connect you to the right lead consultant for your project. It would be quite cumbersome to bounce from expert to expert until you happen upon the one you need. That’s where the project coordinators enter the picture. They gather information, like project details and technical background required, to determine who would be best matched to speak with you on a technical level. As the caller, the more you can help the PCs understand your need, the easier it is for them to get the right lead consultant and ultimately the right expert or team.
Kevin Kennedy Associates sets itself apart from other consulting firms by having project coordinators. We are real people, not automated answering systems, who know the consultants personally and can immediately respond. We are here to help you get the expertise you need as quickly as possible and provide support in the process.
